Transportation is a major emitter of GHG in India. In 2007, the Transport sector was responsible for 7% of the total GHG emissions, most of which was produced by road Transport. These numbers are expected to triple or even quadruple until 2020. The inter-urban railway NAMA in India aims to shift passenger and fright Transport from road or plane towards rail in order to counteract this alarming trend.

Until 2030, the NAMA will:

  • create 6 Dedicated Freight Corridors(DFC) totalling around 9,500 km of rails tracks
  • Construct 14,500 km of 3rd and 4th lines on saturated track routes (plus additional 5th and 6th lines in major metropolises)
  • Double tracking of around 24,000 km of single lines
  • Create 30,000 km of new lines including national Projects and Projects required for strategic regions and international corridors
  • Upgrade the speed on segregated passenger corridors to 100 km/h
  • Electrify around 20,000 km of tracks
  • foster the investment  in a new rolling stock
  • foster the development of railway stations, freight terminals and coaching maintenance terminals
  • upgrade and modernize the technical infrastructure of the railway system

The NAMA is based upon the objectives and principles of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), released in 2008 by the Indian Government.
